Frequently Asked Questions About Dance

What Kind Of Attire Should I Wear To Dance Class?
WOMEN: Casual/Nice clothing i.e. light weight dress, leggings, skirt or a one piece outfit that allows you to move about comfortably. Never wear tight or restrictive clothing. The shoes should be suede or leather soled with a closed toe and back to enable the woman to pivot and turn with ease.
MEN: Slacks and a nice short or long sleeved shirt. Leather or suede soled shoes. No tennis shoes, tank tops or gym attire. Coat and tie are too hot and cumbersom for a dance class. If you are coming straight from the office, remove your coat and tie for class.

Do I Need A Dance Partner?
No. Most commonly classes are for singles and couples unless it is specified in the class schedule.

Am I Too Old To Learn To Dance?

No. It is never too late to learn. Dance classes are for people of all ages young and old. If you are a teenager you may feel more comfortable dancing with people closer to your own age. If you are a senior and prefer dancing with other seniors be sure to ask the instructor if there is a senior program offered. Otherwise, dancing knows not of ones age but of their desire to have fun and express themselves to music.

When At A Party, Is It OK If The Woman Asks The Man For A Dance?
Yes. It is perfectly acceptable for a woman to ask a man for a dance. However, it is considered rude for anyone (man or woman) to repeatedly ask the same person to dance more than three times in one evening. If that person enjoys dancing with you, they will do the asking as well. Give them a chance to ask.

Is It OK To Ask A Married Person to Dance?

If you notice that the married couple dances with other people then it is pretty safe to say it is OK for you to ask. If they only dance with each other, then you should ask the spouse if it is alright to have a dance with your wife or your husband (whatever the case may be) the spouse will appreciate your thoughtfulness and courtesy and usually say "It's up to my wife" or "It's fine with me" or they may say, "Well, I just asked her for this dance, maybe another time". Always be respectful towards a married couple, they may have taken up dancing to spend more time together.

How Do I Ask Someone To Dance?

"May I have this dance?" is always nice.
Or, "Would you like to dance?" works real well.
Polite goes a long way. Impolite, rude, harsh behavior leaves a negative impression. As an example: Just pulling someone on the floor without their permission or snapping your fingers at someone as a hand signal to dance with them.
